Repent Before Things Get a Whole Lot Worse
Today in the Byzantine Rite (according to the Gregorian Calendar anyway) is the Sunday of the Paralytic. He was crippled for 38 years, the Gospel tells us. After curing him, Our Blessed Lord found him again: "Afterwards, Jesus findeth him in the temple, and saith to him: Behold thou art made whole: sin no more, lest some worse thing happen to thee." (Jn 5:14) Being crippled for 38 years was bad enough. Sin so offends God that the pain of Hell is far worse than any pain (physical or mental) that anyone could ever theoretically face in this life. As bad as being crippled for 38 years was, being punished for sin is far worse, so let us repent of our sins lest anything worse happen to us.
