Today's Gospel in the Byzantine Rite:
Luke §66 [12:16-21]
"At that time, Jesus spoke a similitude to them, saying: The land of a certain rich man brought forth plenty of fruits. And he thought within himself, saying: What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said: This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and will build greater; and into them will I gather all things that are grown to me, and my goods. And I will say to my soul: Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years take thy rest; eat, drink, make good cheer. But God said to him: Thou fool, this night do they require thy soul of thee: and whose shall those things be which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich towards God."
Why do we build up lives in this world? They will only die in the fire. Let us purify ourselves of such lives for only Christ survives death and we must therefore join ourselves to Him. Christ, as the Divine Bridegroom, sacrifices Himself on the cross to be used by the Father to sanctify His Bride the Church. Let us reciprocate His love for us and give ourselves to Him for His glory. Only Christ Our Bridegroom survives death so we must join ourselves to Him. Christ already sacrificed Himself to the Father for our sake, so we must reciprocate His sacrifice. We belong to Him for He purchased us with His Blood. He belongs to us for He gives us His Flesh in the Eucharist, which is the Intimacy between Christ and the Church.
