O Lord Thou shalt open my lips and my mouth shall declare Thy praise.

How Couples Should Act

The Nymphios (Bridegroom)
Divine Bridegroom and Lover of mankind, conform couples to Thy Love for the Church, Thy Beloved Bride. As Thou didst sacrifice Thyself to the Father to conform Thy Bride to Him, so too may couples sacrifice themselves to Thee to conform each other to Thee. May their flesh conform each other to Thee as Thy Sacred Flesh dost conform Thy Beloved Church to the Father. May men be the perfect image of Thee, sacrificing themselves without shying away from any suffering to reconcile their brides with Thee as Thou didst go silently as a sheep to the slaughter to reconcile Thy Church with the Father. May women be the image of the Church, not imitating Her internal corruption, but the holy virtue with which Thou didst endow Thy Church, in order to support their bridegrooms in their sufferings and care for their bridegroom's children as Thy Church dost offer Herself to Thee to support Thee in Thy life-giving suffering and dost care for Thy children as Our Holy Mother. May this love of Thine pierce through even the darkest and most massive lives of sin, destroying the death of sin by death in Thee, to show forth Thy glory through the ages of ages. Amen

I Saw Water Coming From His Right Side

During Easter, the Church looks up at the Life-Giving Cross, beholds the Body of Christ, the temple He raised up in three days, and bathes in the water coming from His right side.

I saw water coming from the temple, from the right side, alleluia, and all who came to this water were saved and said, alleluia, alleluia. (Ps) Praise the Lord for He is good, for His mercy endures forever. Glory be. I saw water.

On the Seventh Day God Rested

Eastern Rite Epitaphios (Burial Shroud). Carried in procession by priests
on Good Friday and remains in the Church for Easter.

Today is the seventh day of the week. This is the day God rested after creating the heavens and the earth. This is the day God rested in the tomb after sacrificing Himself for His Bride the Church; that He might be used by the Father as the instrument to sanctify His Bride.

We worship Thy Passion, O Christ! Show us Thy Resurrection!

The Church's Wedding Day

Love holds nothing back. Love consumes the lover as a whole. Love makes the lover demand that he be immolated, sacrificed, and given for the sake of the beloved, that he be used by God to sanctify and take care of the beloved unto life everlasting. The lover is so consumed by love and so obsessed with the salvation of the beloved that he wants to be the only source of nourishment for his bride, be sacrificed to a sufficient degree to care for her. Likewise, he wants to be nourished only through her, so much does he want to see her joined to God.

It is with this love that Christ the Bridegroom loves His Bride the Church and does so perfectly, as the Perfect Bridegroom, the model and exemplar for all spouses. The more a marriage resembles the union between Christ and the Church, the healthier it is. The less it resembles the union between Christ and the Church, the more unhealthy it is. Today is the day Christ gives everything to the Father for the sake of His Bride. His Heart broken by a lance, He gives His entire Self to her, even His Very Body, which She receives in the Eucharist. In Nazareth at the Annunciation, Christ took flesh, betrothing Himself to the Church. Today, the Nymphios weds the Church and consummates His union with Her on the cross through the Eucharist.

Thy Bridegroom is Obedient Unto Death For Thee

This morning praying the Rosary, I remembered that the Glory Be is not said at all during the Triduum. It is omitted from the Mass during Passiontide and during the Triduum it is omitted from everything. It is replaced by the antiphon "Christus factus est", which grows longer each day.

Holy Thursday:
Christus factus est obediens pro nobis usque ad mortem.
Christ became obedient for us unto death.

Good Friday:
Christus factus est obediens pro nobis usque ad mortem, mortem autem crucis.

Christ became obedient for us unto death, death on a cross.

Holy Saturday:

Christus factus est obediens pro nobis usque ad mortem, mortem autem crucis. Propter quod et Deus exaltavit illum et dedit illi nomen quod est super omne nomen.

Christ became obedient for us unto death, death on a cross. Therefore God greatly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every other name.

This is love. The Bridegroom sacrifices Himself to the Father to be used to sanctify His Bride and He does not care how difficult a task that is. Love doesn't count the cost, the lover wants to be completely consumed to strengthen his beloved unto life eternal. Nothing will satisfy Him other than Her sanctification and He wants to be completely consumed for the purpose. This is what we celebrate these three days and we are joyful that we have such a Bridegroom. That's why we call it "Good" Friday. What have we done to return this love to Him? Have we given ourselves to Him completely the same way? Let us give ourselves to Him and confess our sins to ease His sufferings. Let us not persist in our sins, which so severely wound the One who loves us.

Behold the True Bridegroom

The Nymphios (Bridegroom)

In the Eastern Rites, these three days-Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday, and Holy Wednesday-are the three days of the Bridegroom. They are the titular days of this blog on the Byzantine calendar. On these days the cry comes:

The Bridegroom comes to sacrifice Himself to the Father that the Father might use Him to sanctify His Bride the Church. He refuses to act on His own, even when everyone at His trial and at Calvary is calling out to Him to act, but instead gives everything to the Father that the Father might act through Him to care for His Beloved. This is the model for all spouses. This is the model on which all marriage is based. The more a marriage mirrors Christ's self-sacrifice for His Bride, the healthier the marriage. The less it mirrors Christ, the more unhealthy the marriage. Marriage is a sacrifice, not a contract. It is not an agreement between the spouses, it is a self-sacrifice for the sake of each other. Sexual union is the pinnacle and symbol of this entire life of self-sacrifice for each other. If the spouses don't give themselves to God for the sake of each other, then they aren't married. Marriage is a sacrament, and as such involves a giving of self to God. No giving of self to God, no sacrament, no marriage. There are many false notions of marriage out there. Let us take care not to be deceived by them.

Behold, Thy Bridegroom Approacheth!

Palm Sunday - I Class

Rejoice O daughter Sion for behold Thy Bridegroom cometh in meekness and humility, seated upon the foal of an ass!

O Lord, today we praise Thee for Thou dost come as Our Bridegroom to die on the precious and life-giving cross for us! Let not our praise be empty as the praise of the children of Jerusalem who six days later cried out for Thy death, but let us hymn Thee for Thou dost come not to exact vengeance for our sins against Thee, Our only Bridegroom, but instead to sacrifice Thyself to the Father unto the remission of the sins of us thy Bride. We worship Thy Passion, O Christ! We praise and hymn Thee, likewise offering ourselves through Thee to the Father as Thy rightful Bride, O Bridegroom, that we may be cleaved to Thee unto the ages of ages. Amen!

Show us Thy Resurrection which is so nigh!
