Begging for Mercy

The Vespers hymn for Advent. The words serve as nice food for thought as to exactly what it is we are doing during Advent:

English (my translation):
Nourishing Creator of the stars
Eternal Light of believers,
Jesus, Redeemer of all,
hear the prayers of supplicants.

So that demonic deceits wouldn't
destroy the world, on the impulse
of an act of love, Thou became the
medicine of a languishing world.

To expiate the common sin
of the world, Thou went forth
from the intact tabernacle of
the Virgin as a victim to the cross.

Thou Whose powers, glory, and
Name sound from the beginning,
and Heavenly ones and infernal
ones trembling bend the knee.

We beseech Thee Great Judge
of the last day, defend us
from enemies with the
weapons of celestial grace.

Strength, honor, praise, glory be
to God the Father with the Son,
likewise the Holy Advocate,
through the ages of ages.
Amen.
